major turning point for someone who sought protection in the United States. But after receiving the news, a new question often arises: <strong>\u201cMy asylum application has been approved, what\u2019s next and when can I apply for my Green Card?\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"primer-letra\"><br \/>The answer is important: obtaining asylum does not automatically mean receiving permanent residency. This allows him to remain in the United States under that protection and access certain immigration benefits.<\/p><p><br \/>Permanent residency is a different status.<\/p><p><br \/>The law allows certain asylees to later apply for adjustment of status to obtain a Green Card. When can an asylum seeker apply for residency?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ad6c2b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7ad6c2b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One of the main requirements is to have been physically present in the United States for at least one year after the granting of asylum.<\/p><p><br \/>For example, if a person received approval for their asylum on October 10, 2026, they begin accruing that period of physical presence from the date they were granted asylum.<\/p><p><br \/>Here&#039;s an important clarification: USCIS states that the one-year requirement must have been met when the agency adjudicates the adjustment of status application, not necessarily on the exact date the I-485 is filed. This means that a person can file their application before the year is up, but doing so may require additional evidence, and there is a risk that USCIS will decide the case before the requirement is met.<\/p><p><br \/>Therefore, the asylum approval date and physical presence history are data that should be carefully reviewed before submitting the application.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41ad78e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"41ad78e\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-402e1b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"402e1b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3.
